The Ministry of Education has revealed that a paltry less than 2% of class 2 pupils in Ghana can read.

The worrying situation in the educational sector has been attributed partly to the poor reading habits among students, a challenge the Ministry believes can partly be fixed with the provision of more libraries across the country.

The statistics was disclosed in a speech read on behalf of Hon. Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister by the Dir.of Pre -Tertiary Education, Catherine Appiah-Pinkrah at the launch of a project to construct six modern community libraries in Eastern region by investment Company, 9BS International.

The library project to be fully funded by 9BS International as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility following the signing of an investment agreement with the Regional Coordinating Council, Municipal and District Assemblies in the region is expected to be completed within a year.

Also to be constructed are ten(10) boreholes, libraries, and  four(4) community clinics in 20 Districts in the region.

At a durbar to launch the project in Koforidua, the Executive Chairman of 9BS Group of Companies, Mr.Wabadang Vairi told Kasapa News, 9BS International though a business entity, it believes in holistic development which goes with wealth, health and improved living standards hence the interventions.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Darfuor expressed optimism that the partnership with 9BS International will lead to economic transformation in the region and reduce unemployment among the youth.
