A decision by the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Muniru, not to contest for a seat in the upcoming Damongo Constituency primaries of the ruling NDC, has provoked some party members to do the unthinkable.
The members believed to be supporters of Muniru Monday stormed the party’s office and vandalize everything they came across.
They are said to be incensed by the decision of the Regional Minister to withdraw from the party’s upcoming parliamentary elections following intimidation tactics from the incumbent MP, Adam Mutawakilu.
On Sunday, Alhaji Muniru announced his withdrawal from the primaries, noting that his decision was to help seek party unity and cohesion.
Prior to his withdrawal, reports were rife that there was a rift between the two parties following Alhaji Muniru’s decision to contest the parliamentary primaries.
In May 2015, the incumbent MP accused the Regional Minister of breaching the party’s constitution by campaigning to win the Damongo seat ahead of the official opening of nominations and demanded from the regional executives to call him to order.
But Alhaji Muniru insisted he did no wrong.
Since then, there have been growing concerns of tension between followers of the two party stalwarts.
Inside sources say Alhaji Muniru who is currently on an official duty in Brazil after reviewing his stance and the general atmosphere in the constituency, decided to pull out from the race in order to maintain unity in the party.
But his supporters who felt he had broken the social contract between them decided to do otherwise.
