Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, says there is no one to blame for the torrid times the party is going through apart from the Steering Committee which he described has not living up to expectation.
Wading into the issue of alleged diversion of funds from a ‘secret’ Ecobank account by two national executives of the party on News File Saturday, the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikoi South said the matter has degenerated because of disagreements among the leadership of the party.
“I can tell you that all these issues about bank account and all that is as a result of disagreements at the Steering Committee level. They have not come to agreement as to how to conduct their affairs and this disagreement of party account is just another instance of the Steering Committee’s inability on how to conduct themselves,” he noted.
The Steering Committee of the NPP is made up of the National Chairperson, National Vice-Chairpersons, Presidential Candidate, Party’s Parliamentary Leader, Chairperson of the Council of Elders and the General Secretary.
The rest are the National Treasurer, National Women Organiser, National Youth Organiser and Nasara Coordinator.
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has began inquiry into allegations of corruption against the Fist National Vice-Chairman of NPP, Freddie Blay and the Treasurer, Kwabena Abankwa Yeboah.
The two are accused of operating a ‘secret’ account at the Ridge Towers Branch of Ecobank at the blind side of other national executives, especially, the National Chairman, Paul Afoko and General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong.
The move follows a complaint lodged at the national headquarters of the Ghana Police Service by Baah Akyemfour, a card bearing member of the elephant family.
Akyemfour does not understand the reason why the Mr. Blay and Abankwa Yeboah are the signatories to the said party account bearing the name “NPP Election 2010” when the constitution of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo Tradition says otherwise.
He is equally disturbed by the way and manner in which the said bank account was reactivated on June 1, 2015, without a resolution from the party.
That aside, he does not understand why Ecobank would sanction that move without first considering the laws governing the NPP.
Such acts, according to him, constitute a breach of the party’s constitution and the laws of the land and therefore must be investigated with sanctions applied where applicable.
So far, Mr. Blay, Afoko, and Kwabena Agyepong have been invited to assist the Police with investigations into the said matter.
Mr. Blay, this website understands has declined the invitation.
The party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko, on the contrary, has honoured the invitation and written his statement to that effect.
The General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong who is outside the country is yet to respond to the invite.
The Treasurer, Abankwa Yeboah, this website is told is yet to be invited by the Police.
