A 40-year-old palm wine tapper at Samenye in the Jomoro District in the Western Region has been arrested by the police for strangling his girlfriend for refusing to have sex with him.
The suspect, Emu Kwao, was nearly lynched after the community found out what he had done.
But for the timely intervention of the police, he would have been handed instant justice.
Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Jomoro District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr John F. Dzineku, said Kwao had confessed to the act and told the police that he deserved to be punished.
Mr Dzineku said Kwao had been in a relationship with the victim for the past two years.
He said preliminary police investigations indicated that the suspect retired to bed with the girlfriend on a rainy night on Wednesday and demanded to have sex with her.
The woman, according to the police commander, refused to have sex with Kwao on the pretext that her 16-year-old son, who had come on a visit, was sleeping in the next room.
She was said to have told Kwao that it was morally wrong to have anything to do with him, since her son was sleeping in a room next to theirs.
Mr Dzineku said Kwao did not take kindly to the response and, in an attempt to have his way, he held the woman’s neck to the ground until she suddenly dropped dead.
Kwao is currently in police custody helping in investigations, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Half-Assini Government Hospital for autopsy.
