There’s not a single government employed Medical Doctor at Atwima Kwanwoma District near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Dr. Nsiah Asare has revealed.
According to him, this is because there’s no District Hospital in the area with a population of about 140,000 people, adding that the situation is no different in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa District and other districts in the Upper West Region.
The Ghana Medical Association(GMA) has questioned why newly trained qualified dentists and doctors remain at home yet to be employed by government despite the disproportion in doctor-to-patient ratio.
Speaking at the GMA’s conference in Koforidua over the weekend, the President of the Association Dr Frank Ankobiah described as untanable the continues excuse of lack of financial clearance, adding that steps must be taken immediately to address the issue.
Commenting on the issue, Dr Nsiah Asare was hopeful that with Ghana completing the IMF programme in December 2018, there will be room for employment of more doctors to deliver healthcare to the citizenry.
“If we want this country to develop what we have to do is to employ the needed professionals in all the sectors, we’re almost done with the IMF conditionalities as a country. The 2019 budget will will cater for a number of doctors to be employed and cleared to augment the existing number. The coming year will see over 300 doctors being employed as we already have financial clearance.”
