Renowned under cover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has rubbished claims by Mrs. Christine-Marie Nyantakyi, wife of the banned former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwasi Nyantakyi that the latter paid a whopping $100,000 to stop the public screening of Number 12 documentary.
Mrs. Nyantakyi, in an interview on Good Evening Ghana show on Metro TV, admitted that her husband doled out $100, 000 in a desperate bid to block the documentary which captured Mr Nyantakyi negotiating how to create a fake agency to pocket 20 per cent of a supposed five-year sponsorship deal for the Ghana Premier League worth $15 million.
“Well, there’s information, and there’s truth in that information. Apparently, we became so desperate when we realized that all that they presented to us were false, so we tried to make some interventions, and they proposed that he pays some money.
“They proposed $150,000; my husband couldn’t afford it, so he gave out $100,000 dollars, and they came back to him and said the person says you need to add $50,000, and he said well, I don’t have it; that’s all that I have,”Mrs Nyantakyi said during the interview.
She, however stated that the amount was paid back in two tranches after the documentary which has effectively damaged her husband’s career was screened.
“They brought $40,000 first; and then later on, they brought $60,000 dollars. I have not gathered the courage to watch the full video, because the small that I watched, I knew that the way he is talking; that is not my husband; something might have gone wrong.”
But Anas Aremeyaw Anas in an interview on Citi TV Monday, described Mrs Nyantakyi’s claims as cooked up story, urging the public to treat it with the contempt that it deserves.
“I didn’t watch that interview but I read it and what I gathered I thought it was a bit interesting. Here you are, your husband has been under a lot of public pressure and has always denied the issues that have come, people who are accusing your husband have come to you and they’ve made a demand of a $100,000, you’ve parted away with the money, why, if you are innocent why would you part away with a $100,000.
“I also read that she said the people paid the money back, and you can’t mention their names. I wish she could have said Anas and his team did but she didn’t, there’s a reason for that because she knows that, that never happened.”
Background
Nyantakyi, came under scrutiny in June this year following an undercover investigation done by Ghanaian journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas between 2016 and 2018.
Nyantakyi was captured on videos negotiating a deal with businessmen and accepting a bribe of $65,000 to help establish an oil business in his native country.
Also, he was filmed while negotiating how to create a fake agency to pocket 20 per cent of a supposed five-year sponsorship deal for the Ghana Premier League worth $15 million. He would’ve been $3.7 million richer if everything had gone as planned.
