The Head of Academic Research at the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Centre, Dr. Kwesi Anning has said the one-month duration for the Commission of Inquiry probing the violence that characterized the recent by-election at Ayawaso West Wuogon is inadequate.
According to him, the Commission will need more ample time to do a good job because even the identification of persons involved will take some time.
“They’ll need solid foresic support, they’ve got to get access to mobile phones, they’ve got to draw the networks that supported the recruitment, the funding all sorts of things. Any matter of interest that is another extremely wide remit. Based on what we know about the four individuals being able to put the facts on the table should not be the problem. The problem is the will to say we’ll deal with the recommendations.” Dr.Aning said on Joy FM’s News File show Saturday.
The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday February 6, 2019 set up a Presidential Commission of Inquiry to investigate the Ayawaso-West-Wuogon by-election violence.
The Commission is composed of: Mr. Justice Emile Short – Chairperson, Mrs. Henrietta Mensah Bonsu – Member, Mr. Patrick K. Acheampong – Member.
Mr. Ernest Kofi Abotsi, former Dean of the Faculty of Law of GIMPA and private legal practitioner, has been appointed as Secretary to the Commission.
The Commssion has to submit within one month its report to the President giving reasons for its findings and recommendations, including appropriate sanctions if any.
