The opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) wants President Akufo-Addo to consider what it describes as a “National Dialogue on Constitutionalism and Non-Violent Social Engagement” that will largely deal with the threat of organized violence in the country.

In a letter dated 21st, March,2019 and addressed to the President by the National Chairman,Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo said” Organized violence has become prevalent not only in partisan politics(inter and intra-party) but in the land and natural resources disputes, chieftaincy disputes, disputes within academic institutions, and even disputes within religious bodies. We can also not exclude the problem of unjustified violence by state agencies such as the Ghana Police Service. It is this larger and intensifying violence culture that threatens our constitutional republic and not just partisan political violence. We hope that as the first citizen you will use your position to support and shape this broad national dialogue.”

The NDC Chairman in the letter further commended President Akufo-Addo for his statesmanship and willingness to engage the NDC on the canker, while it assured him and the general public of their commitment to respond in the same vein in the national interest.

“We hope to remain constructive partners in advancing the quest for constitutionalism and peaceful engagement in all areas of national life,” the letter issued by the National Chairman read in part.

This comes on the heels of the governing New Patriotic Party’s letter forwarded to the NDC over the much-awaited dialogue to break up party affiliated vigilante groups in the country.

The leadership of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) days ago officially wrote to the main opposition NDC inviting them for a dialogue over the much talked about debate to break up party militia affiliated to both parties.

“The NPP proposes that this crucial meeting comes off during this week, at a venue convenient to you. And so, we entreat you to as soon as possible, get in touch with the party when you find a suitable venue for this meeting,” the General Secretary John Boadu said in the letter addressed to the national chairman of the NDC Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

Meanwhile, the two parties in the last correspondence issued by the ruling NPP seems to be reaching a middle-ground in relation to the hurdle of a mediator that dragged the proposed meeting.
