Commercial Drivers solidarizing with their troubled colleagues [Trotro Driver and Mate] arrested for allegedly beating to pulp a Police Officer, say they are remaining calm in anticipation of the outcome of bail application filed by their Lawyers on behalf of the suspects.

Speaking on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM,  the Spokesperson for ‘True Drivers Union’ said but for the intervention of their Lawyers, they almost went on rampage today, to protest the abuse suffered by Francis Buaben, the driver and Albert Ansah, the conductor, while they were in the custody of the Police.

“We’d decided to protest angrily against the injustice seen in the matter so far, but yesterday our Lawyers[Martin Kpebu, Francis Xavier Sosu, our mum Cynthia and Mr. Samuel from Amnesty International met with us to calm us down. We haven’t slept the whole night; we went back to our people to plead with them to hold the fire in anticipation of the bail application being sought by the Counsel and other interest groups. We thank our drivers for holding on with the protest, but they ought to still be on alert because come 1st April we shall besiege the Weija Circuit court to support our colleague,” Yaw Barimah said in an interview with host Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Kasapa Monday.

Interest groups including Amnesty International, Human Rights Advocacy Centre (HRAC), Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), on Friday stormed the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service to demand the whereabouts of the two persons.

This is after being alarmed as the two could not be found at the police station where they were supposed to be held.

The interest groups were later informed that the suspects had been transferred to the BNI Headquarters for their safety over fears that they would be abused by police officers or the police station may be besieged by other drivers.

Later a selected few were allowed to see the suspects but the meeting was held at a location outside the BNI Headquarters.

A preliminary court hearing remanded the two until their next appearance on Monday, April 1, but their Lawyers are fighting for a bail for them.
