Women in Law and Development, Africa (WILDAF) Ghana, has described the spirited defence of President Akufo Addo by three female ministers over his lack of female activism comment as an attempt to break the front of gender advocates.
The appointees in the wake of the backlash held a news conference to express their unflinching support for the President as they lashed out at persons including the former Gender Minister, Nana Oye Lithur for criticizing the President.
Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu Ekuful questioned what help Gender activists in the country have offered in terms of support to female MPs to build their capacities.
But Senior Programmes Officer for WILDAF, Frank Bogya in an interview with Starr News described the development as unfortunate.
“Interestingly many of these women who are talking about this today have been part of civil society so you wonder what they bring on board, their interest. Is it that their interest is only when I am leading or only when I am in opposition and I want to get power that I will need the support of civil society. This is the question we should put to them that at every point in time they remain women forever.
“This is a way to put a wedge between those advocating for women’s right so that the front will break and then they’ll have the advantage. It has always happened that whenever anything around women happens they try as much as possible to push some women to come forward to condemn their fellow women who are on the other side of the divide or who are demanding for something to be done and I think that it is not the proper thing to do. They must assess themselves and assess the situation in which this comment is being made that our President has gone out there to make a statement that ridicules the country that shows that Ghana is not serious with the gender equality agenda,” Mr Bogya added.
