Fifty accused persons of the Tumu Senior High Technical School facing criminal charges of unlawful damages among others following some disturbances at the school will reappear before the Tumu Magistrate court today.
The alleged instigators of the riot, Mr Richard Narimah Kantong and Mr. Suleman Bashan were denied bail and remanded in police custody for 6 days to reappear today together with the 48 others.
Fifty accused students of the Tumu Senior High Technical School were arraigned before the Tumu Magistrate Court Tuesday 11th June 2019.
It follows the damage of highly valuable property of the school and for threatening the lives of some staff of the school on 23rd May 2019 demonstration which led to the subsequent closure of the school
According to the Police report to the court, the accused persons were “charged for causing unlawful damages, stealing and carrying offensive weapons such as cutlasses and stones during the riot.
The alleged instigators of the riot were revealed to be Mr Richard Narimah Kantong and Mr. Suleman Bashan who ganged up other Form Three (3) students to destroy the property of the school and some staff identified as the headmaster, Mr Woyor Abass, the assistant headmaster, Mr Joseph Gandayari, the chief examinations officer, Mr. Seth Yaw Atta, the senior housemaster, Mr Seidu Amadu, Mr Abu Raman Hadi and Mr Dominic Yaw Tunti whom they alleged did not allow them to cheat in exams
According to the court report, out of the 50 accused students, 21 students were recorded present and 29 students absent of which 22 were not present because the police did not have enough information about them and the remaining 7 accused students have not been arrested yet.
Following the court proceedings, the magistrate of the Tumu court, His Worship Ernest Yao Agbenye granted the 19 accused students present a bail sum of GH₵ 5,000 each with a bail condition of one surety each who should be in an active service and earn not less than a net salary of GH₵ 1,000.00
Some guardians present at the last court hearing, however, expressed their displeasure for the court hearing and they described it as being unfair with some saying not all the students took part in the riotous behaviour.
