The Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah has met artists participating in this year’s Chale Wote Festival to discuss the launch of the #AccraforArt project which would see the city use visual arts to project images of who we are in Accra and what we can offer the world, among others as a follow up to the Festival.
The meeting which was held at the Accra City Hall on Tuesday, was attended by both artists from Ghana and beyond.
Addressing the artists, Mayor Sowah said, “The city authority will launch the #AccraforArt project. We want to make a case that perceptions can be changed through the use arts. We want Africa and the world to know and think of Accra and choose it above all as a safe place to visit, live and do business, and we are adopting the strategy of working with creative artists in the city and around the world to achieve this.”
“Chalewote is the biggest street art festival in the whole of Africa, as such it’s important that the city authority ensures that all the necessary measures are put in place to ensure public safety and boost tourism,” he added.
He further added that the project was one of the most important contributions towards our country’s economic development.
He revealed that a consortium of AMA officials and artists’ representative would lead this initiative. The consortium is expected to work in conjunction with the creative artists in the city to achieve this goal.
“Together with various artists groups, it shall mobilize public sentiments under the branding theme, #AccraforArt, ” he averred.
Nii Mantse, Head of AccraDotAlt, the organizers of the Chalewote Festival expressed his appreciation to Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) especially the Mayor as well as other stakeholders for their support over the years and urged the public to participate fully in the event.
