The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has recorded three casualties involving Ghanaian nationals in the surge of Xenophobic attacks seen in the past few days in south Africa.

A statement issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry said:”…our Mission in Pretoria has reported that three [3] Ghanaians have been injured in the xenophobic unrest. The Mission is ensuring that the injured Ghanaians receive the necessary medical attention.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry also reports that some 5 Ghanaians have been arrested and detained by the SA security agencies over resident permits in the aftermath of the unrest.

However, officials say they’ve “visited the Police Station to provide consular assistance to the detained Ghanaians and are following up on the matter. ”

The Foreign Affairs Ministry also noted in its statement that:”Our Mission continues to send regular updates and advice to the leadership of the Ghanaian Communities in the various South African provinces about the need to remain calm and stay away from crowded places and large gatherings.

In an earlier update on the situation, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, H.E George Ayisi Boateng said no Ghanaian was attacked in the renewed xenophobic attack in that country.

Black natives in South Africa have for the past week taken to brutalizing, looting and burning of shops owned by other nationals in Pretoria and Johannesburg.

South African police have arrested dozens of the protestors who claim immigrants, especially Nigerians are taking over their jobs and selling illicit drugs.
