The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has reviewed and streamlined the academic curricula of all nursing training colleges and allied institutions as it takes over to mentor and enhance the certificates of the tertiary level health institutions.

It follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on February 5, 2014 between the Ministry of Health and its health training institutions and KNUST, which gave the university the mandate to mentor all the health training institutions of the Ministry.

Sequel to the arrangement, several training programmes have also been carried out for the staff to bring their expertise to the required level and a national centralised examination has also been conducted first for midwifery, and subsequently for nursing and community health training institutions by the College of Health Sciences of the University.

The Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof William Otoo-Ellis, announced this at the graduation of over 5,000 graduands of the 67 health training collages across the country under the new arrangement in Kumasi.

He said arrangements are underway with the Ministry to integrate all those who have completed the certificate programmes through the creation of an innovative and progressive system that brings distinction and academic career progression to the training of the middle level health professionals and, thus, creating greater access for higher education.

The idea, according to the Vice Chancellor, was to minimise some of the frustrations of the middle level personnel of the health sector.

Prof Otoo-Ellis stated that there would be changes to the way a lot of things are done in the health training colleges as the university strives to establish academic excellence.

‘Remember that by your certificate, you are now a product of one of the best Science and Technology Universities in Africa and obviously among the best in the world. Therefore, reflect that in your output and professional carrier,’ the Vice Chancellor challenged the graduands.
