Ghana is spared from the grips of the deadly coronavirus pandemic that seems to be spreading, slowly, in sub-saharan Africa.
Ivory Coast registered its first case of the virus on Wednesday. The development means all of Ghana’s neighboring countries have recorded at least a case of the novel virus.
As of Wednesday, March, 11, 2020, health officials had recorded 57 suspected cases of the disease which have all been confirmed negative.
President, Nana Akufo-Addo in an address on Wednesday, 11th March, 2020 said its imperative that the country steps up its preparedness to ensure it adopts what he calls “a whole of Ghana approach” in fighting the global plague notwithstanding the current satisfactory measures in Ghana’s response plan.
“Our country’s two main research institutions, the Noguchi Memorial Institute and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research, which have the capacity to investigate and confirm or otherwise suspected cases of Coronavirus infections, have been very supportive in this regard. So far, they have found that the fifty-seven (57) suspected cases, as of Wednesday, 11th March, have proved negative,” he said.
Ghana’s Ministry of Health has been allotted an amount of USD 100 million to help prepare and contain an outbreak of the deadly coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), President Akufo-Addo disclosed in an address on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the index cases in Africa, appear mostly to be travelers from Europe.
