A total of 406 persons who have violated the Imposition of Restrictions Act 2020 (Act 1012) which came into force following the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Ghana have been arrested across the country.
According to ACP Lydia Donkor Head of Prosecution, Accra Region of the Ghana Police Service, 248 persons have been granted bail while 41 others have been processed for court.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday on the fight against Coronaviris pandemic, the top Police officer cum lawyer advised the general public to comply with all the rules and regulations governing the Imposition of Restrictions Act.
ACP Lydia Donkor further stated that all her colleague Heads of Legal and Prosecutions in all the other regions have been charged to ensure that they enforce Section 6 of the Imposition of Restrictions Act 2020, Act 1,012.
“I’ll state here for emphasis that if you’re arrested you’ll be prosecuted after successful investigations and if you’re found guilty you are likely to pay a fine ranging from GHC12,000 to GHC60,000 or to a term of imprisonment of four up to ten years. So it is in your own interest to comply with the rules and regulations and ensure that you stay at home. If you’re found on the road and the officers are compelling you to go back home, ensure that you don’t engage in any resistance with the officers. If you do that you’re going to be arrested and you’ll spend time in our custody and you’ll not be free to go home. So stay at home, stop the spread and let’s stay safe.”
