The Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Film Authority [NFA], Mr David Dontoh is appealing to the government for a one-time grant of GHc100 million to develop the Ghana film industry.
He said the seed money is essential to building the internal structures, finance infrastructure and provide seed money for the Film Development Fund which would make funds available for the production of films.
Mr Dontoh further explained that if the fund was provided, the Film Development Fund would be used to professionally train film-makers to make internationally marketable movies laced with positive Ghanain images.
He pledged that projects to be financed under the grant would be well maintained.
The board chairman of the NFA, who is also an accomplished actor, intimated that such culturally conscious movies, capable of making Ghanaian films an export item and also projecting the national identity, were usually the result of research into the country’s culture, mythology and history and, therefore, came with big budgets.
Mr Dontoh said it had become urgent to request the seed money as that was the only viable way to jump-start the industry.
“We are appealing to President Akufo Addo to etch his name in Ghanaian film history in the same way as President Goodluck Jonathan’s name can never be left out in the history of Nollywood development”. He told Daily Graphic
