The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it will soon begin metering Military camps across the country with new prepaid meters.

The ECG is awaiting approval from government to begin the exercise as the Ministries of Finance, Interior and Defence are currently engaging over the issue.

Other institutions to be installed with prepaid meters are the Police and National Security Secretariat and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The Power Company has currently fixed prepaid meters on all University of Ghana facilities to ensure utmost returns for the power provided consumers.

A member of the ECG Tariff Committee, Ebenezer Baiden who made the disclosure at a workshop organized by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) for selected journalists at Ada over the weekend.

He stated that the decision to install such meters at the Military camps has become necessary due to the fact that power is used for commercial activities in the camps but are unpaid for.

“It has been realized that a lot of commercial activities are done at the camps drawing lots of power but no bill is paid to the state in that regard”.

Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana is embarking on an exercise to fix a total of 400,000 prepaid meters for customers in the Ashanti Region.
