A police officer, G/Sgt George Amankwa of the Ajumako Police station has been detained for stealing money from the Enyan Denkyira Rural Bank, Ajumako Agency, in the Central Region where he was on duty.

According to the facts of the case, the Supervising Manager of the bank, Joseph Kobina Bentum during his routine audit check on the bank’s tellers on 23rd November, 2020, noticed that two of them namely Hannah Ekua Obenewaa Appiah and Assifuah Ninson could not account for cash(coins) of GHC490 and 200 respectively being their sales after business.

The two tellers when questioned insisted that they successfully balanced their accounts and are shocked how the shortages occurred.

Their denial compelled management of the bank to re-play the recorded footage captured on CCTV cameras installed within the precincts of the bank to establish what accounted for the shortages.

In the process, G/Sgt George Amankwa of Ajumako Police station who was on duty at the said bank on 20th November 2020, between the hours of 9:15pm and 10:30pm, was captured pilfering the said amounts from the drawers in the cages of the two tellers.

The matter was reported to the Mankessim Divisional Police commander, ACP Owuahene Agyei Acheamong and in the presence of the Divisional Crime Officer DSP Awampaga Robert, the thief in police uniform confessed having stolen the amount.

He has been detained in custody after an investigation caution statement was obtained from him.
