Residents of Kukuo, Duli Zugu and Yipelinaayili in the Kumbungu District are against politicians storming the area to campaign until they are connected to the national electricity grid.

“We wish to emphasize that if nothing is done about our plight, we will be left with no option but to stay away from the polls next year,” a petition issued on behalf of the three communities at a durbar said.

The durbar, attended by community members, chiefs, representatives of some political parties, representatives of Kumbungu District Assembly and members of the media, was to deliberate on the issue of lack of electricity at the communities.

The three communities, said to be farming communities along the main Tamale-Kumbungu Road in the Kumbungu District with a population of about 1,200 and about 120 houses, have been without electricity for many years.

“Even though we are just about three kilometers away from the Kumbungu District capital and about four kilometers away from the regional capital, Tamale, with high tension electric pylons passing through our communities, the authorities have failed to extend electricity to our communities despite persistent appeals to them in that regard”.

“Having become tired of listening to empty promises by politicians, we have decided to give our votes in exchange for electricity since the lack of electricity is drawing our communities backward in terms of development”.
