Over 5000 residents in Nyamekrom a suburb of New Juaben South in the Eastern Regional capital have been cut off since Friday after a violent flood caused by an overflowing river washed away a culvert and portion of the only road linking the Community to Koforidua.
Residents who had traveled before the disaster struck could not return while those in their homes could not leave to town.
Nurses, teachers, students, and workers were equally stranded.
On Sunday, the residents mobilized to construct a wooden footbridge to enable them to cross the Kwakwanua river which overflowed its banks after heavy rain and submerged about 30 homes.
The Assembly Member for Nyamekrom, Enock Boahene told GHone News, the situation needs an emergency response by the Central government to reconstruct the bridge immediately to restore normalcy to the community.
According to him, the disaster is creating serious sanitation challenges which would worsen in the coming days due to the inability of waste collection vehicles to cross to the community to empty waste generated by residents.
The New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive, Isaac Appaw Gyasi on Sunday visited the scene to assess the situation.
The 10.1-kilometer Koforidua -Nyamekrom to Supriso road was awarded on contract and sod-cutting ceremony performed by the Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia on October 27, 2020 but construction work is progressing at a snail pace.
