State prosecutors have closed their case in which some 10 persons are standing trial for their alleged involvement in an attempt to overthrow government after calling 14 witnesses.
The prosecution ended its case after Chief Inspector Michael Nkrumah, the investigator, the 14th Prosecution Witness ended his cross-examination from defence lawyers.
Moments after Lawyer Anthony Lartey, counsel for Yohanne Zikpi, the fourth Accused person ended his scrutiny of the witness (Investigator), the Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs. Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa said, “We wish to close our case at this court.”
Dr Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, the Chief Executive Officer of Citadel Hospital, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr. Benjamin Agordzo and eight others have all been charged.
Dr Mac-Palm and seven others including WOII Esther Saan have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and high treason while ACP Dr. Agordzo and Col. Kojo Gameli have also denied the charge of abetment each.
They have been admitted to bail and are standing trial.
A panel of three High Court justices presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe directed the defence lawyers to file their submission of no case to answer if any.
The court panel which also includes Her Ladyship Justice Hafisata Amaleboba and His Lordship Justice Stephen Oppong ordered the parties to file any submission they intend to file by July 12.
The court subsequently fixed July 25, 2022 to rule on the submission of no case to answer.
According to EIB Network’s Court Correspondent Murtala Inusah what the accused persons are asking per their submission of no case to answer is that, they are asking the court for an acquittal without them having to present a defence.
