Ghana would from Monday June 8 through to June 10, mourn the victims of the GOIL fuel filling station disaster and floods that killed more than hundred people, President John Dramnai Mahama has directed.
He also announced the release of GH₵50million to support the affected flood victims.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) was also directed to establish emergency centers across the country to rescue flooding victims.
The directives were issued Thursday following an emergency meeting he held with heads of the various security agencies in the country.
“Such rescue operations will continue until the weekend, Sunday. On Monday, we will observe three days of National mourning for the victims of the fire disaster and the flooding. Flags will fly at half-mast from Monday for three days,” he said.
The President however called on Ghanaians to uphold the relative peace the country is enjoying and refrain from things that would undermine it.
“As we mourn the deceased today and the days ahead, let us work together as one team and one nation…and be determined never to have a repeat of such a national disaster”, he noted.
He added “drastic steps are necessary here if we are to permanently address this perennial problem”.
He said the country would intensify its efforts to expand a modernized drainage system flooding situations and urged general public to fully cooperate with the government “to set right what has been wronged for far too long”.
“We cannot continue to allow a situation where the convenience of a few undermines the safety of the many. Our first priority now is to save lives and prevent any further suffering of our people but beyond that we’ll take the tough measures that are necessary to prevent such disasters from occurring in the future.”
He announced the activation of the National Call Center for emergency situations where subscribers of MTN, Vodafone and Airtel can call 112 for assistance.
