A demonstration by residents of Shama in the Western Region Monday, July 3, 2023, turned chaotic after a scuffle ensued between the demonstrators and police.
The residents blocked all major town roads on morning to express their grievances over government’s failure to construct their town roads.
As they embarked on the demonstration, a scuffle ensued between the police and the demonstrators at Shama junction when the police prevented the blocking of the road.
This resulted in the firing of warning shots by the police.
An altercation also ensued resulting in the police also hitting one of the demonstrators.
The Shama district is inhabited by numerous companies which contribute greatly to the nation’s economy.
However, there is much to be desired in terms of infrastructure. For years, residents have clamored for their roads to be reconstructed after it was awarded on contract.
As such, the residents took to the streets today to demonstrate.
