Editor of the Hawk Newspaper, Charles McCarthy says the election of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) does not in anyway expunge the Akan party label on the NPP.

The General Secretary of the party, Justine Frimpong Kodua following the election of Dr. Bawmia was the first to declare that the Akan tag on the party has forever been cleared.

The Eastern Regional Branch of the party which holds the same view has stated that the Veep’s election as flagbearer of the party has silenced critics who previously portrayed the NPP as an Akan-dominated party, lacking political inclusivity.

A statement issued by the Regional Communications officer of the party, Evans Osei Yeboah Tsooboi said, the primary has not only set the stage for a heated electoral battle but also underscored the NPP’s commitment to unity and inclusivity.

This decision, the party said has not only been seen as a significant triumph for the Vice President but also as a reaffirmation of the NPP’s unwavering dedication to embracing individuals from diverse backgrounds, irrespective of their religion, tribe, or creed.

But speaking on Ghana Kasa show on Kasapa 102.5FM/Agoo TV on Monday, the Editor of the Hawk Newspaper, Charles McCarthy said the NPP should not be quick to lose its identity because of happiness.

“The fact is that the NPP’s stronghold is the Ashanti Region, the NDC’s is the Volta Region. These are known facts that cannot be conceal. So merely electing Bawumia does not invalidate that tag. NPP is still an Akan dominated party. Let’s do the maths and see how many Akans are in the NPP as against Northerners in the NPP. So, this issue it’s neither here nor there.”

He added: “The party and JFK who is the General Secretary should rather think of Preserving Bawumia as Flagbearer so that what happened to Paul Afoko does not befall Bawumia because Paul Afoko was equally elected as National Chairman of the party from the North and he was suspended on flimsy reasons. So if today Bawumia is elected, JFK should be putting in place mechanisms to protect him so that nobody will come at him.”

The NPP successfully concluded its Presidential primary on Saturday November 4, 2023 with the election of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s Flagbearer for the highly anticipated 2024 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia polled 118,210 representing 61.43% votes in the Presidential primary held across the country on Saturday, November 4, 2023, which had about 210,000 delegates casting their ballot.

His closest contender, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Ken Agyapong polled 71, 996 votes which represented 37.41%
