The Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso Boakye has told Parliament that government spent GHC900,000 on pre-implementation activities and launch of the National Rental Assistance Scheme.
The Minister further disclosed that GHC30 million has so far been disbursed to applicants across six regions in the country.
Answering questions on the floor of Parliament, the Minister explained that thousand applicants have benefitted from the scheme with Bono East having the highest number.
“To operationalize the National Rental Assistance Scheme, the Ministry of Works and Housing constituted a team that spearheaded the design and modalities for implementation. The team organized stakeholder consultation and developed materials for sensitization on the scheme. Over all, the Ministry for Works and Housing expended a total of GHC900,000 on the pre-implementation activities and official launch of the scheme,” Hon. Asenso Boakye stated.
The Government in January 2023 commenced the roll out of the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) intended to support deserving households to access decent rental accommodation and to effectively protect them from exploitation and burdensome rent advance payments.
The Scheme, which is a key intervention by government, is expected to provide low-to-middle income earners with a mechanism to pay low monthly rent, which effectively removes the need for rent advance payment and ultimately improve the quality of rental accommodation especially in the urban cities.
