The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 Presidential candidate Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia is expected to unveil his running mate Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh who doubles as the Minister of Energy on Tuesday 9th July 2024 in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, if cleared by the National council of the party on Thursday 4th July 2024 meeting in Accra.
Dr. Bawumia had earlier disclosed to Dr. Opoku Prempeh that he has chosen him as his flagbearer before the Party’s Presidential primary that eventually elected Dr. Bawumia as a flag bearer.
However, alleged disagreement between President Nana Akufo Addo and his close friend Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi who was also allegedly lobbying for Minister of Education Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum to be considered for the running mate slot delayed the official presentation of NAPO’s name for consideration by the other major stakeholders of the party and the national council.
Speaking to EIB’s Ashanti regional correspondent Isaac Justice Bediako in Kumasi, a member of the national executive disclosed on condition of anonymity that ”bearing any last minutes changes at the council meeting on Thursday Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh will be unveil in a grand in grand style in Kumasi in the Ashanti region the stronghold of the party. Currently, Dr. Bawumia has broken all the barriers holding NAPO’s appointment therefore NAPO’s fate is in the hands of the national council to realize Dr. Bawumia’s wish’’.
He admitted the selection of the running mate has created a lot of division in the party however, the national executive and President Nana Akufo Addo are all prepared to resolve all issues for the party to approach the 2024 general elections which are peaking in unity.
He added: “the party leadership has also instituted measures to calm all party supporters who are in disagreement with the choice of Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh as running mate to Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’’.
Before the confirmation of Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to Dr. Bawumia, internal campaign activities have already taken off in Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti region as about 4 people are campaigning to delegates to be considered as parliamentary candidate to replace NAPO.
