Running mate of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has defended his assertion that no Ghanaian president has been as successful as President Akufo Addo.

He came under heavy flak from a section of the public after he compared the current President with Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who has been considered by many as the most influential, vanguardist African leader of the 20th century through his contributions to international politics.

Many including the Minority Leader in Parliament, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah has called on Dr. Opoku Prempeh aka NAPO to retract and render an apology for doing such comparison.

Despite the backlash and widespread disapproval of his claim, the outgoing Minister for Energy insists his statement is the truth.

In a courtesy call on the Omanhene of Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area in the Western Region, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, Dr. Opoku Prempeh defended his comment.

“In our Ghanaian politics, political parties are given four years to govern and a possible reelection for a second term. You(traditional authorities) have backed President Akufo-Addo and he has done his best for Ghana. I made a statement during my outdooring and I have come under a barrage of criticisms. I said that since independence of Ghana, from Dr. Kwame Nkrumah till now, no government has performed better than President Akufo-Addo’s. It is the truth and I stand by that comment.”
