The Ghana Freedom Party has voiced surprise and disappointment over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to disqualify their candidates from the upcoming elections, despite addressing all indicated errors prior to resubmission.
According to the party, they had meticulously reviewed and corrected all issues indicated by the EC before re-submitting their nomination forms.
“We are shocked and dismayed by the Electoral Commission’s decision to disqualify our candidates, particularly after we had diligently rectified all errors identified during the initial review.”
In an interview with Osuani Afrifa on Kasapa News, Nana Poku, aid to Roman Fada, revealed that the party received a distress call on Friday, November 8, while in Kumasi, from some people who guaranteed their candidate regarding threats from alleged EC officers.
This prompted the leadership of the party to contact an officer at the commission, cautioning that the commission would be exposed if the threats continued. The party subsequently sent a formal letter to them regarding the alleged threats against endorsers.
However, upon their return to Kumasi, they received another call from the EC to correct errors in their candidacy documents.
Party officials rectified the mistakes, which were errors on the commission’s part, and resubmitted the documents. Despite this, the EC surprisingly disqualified their candidate.
He asserted that leadership of the The Ghana Freedom Party is currently holding meetings to determine their next course of action, weighing options to either contest the decision in court or await further developments.
This development comes amid the disqualification of Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) replacement flagbearer, after uncovering errors and illegalities on his nomination form.
This announcement was made by EC Chair Jean Mensa at a press conference held on Tuesday, November 12.
