President John Dramani Mahama has assured Labour Unions that his administration will cut down on wasteful spending and prioritize prudent economic management.

Addressing labour unions today, February 20, President Mahama expressed deep concern over the state of Ghana’s economy, describing some of the financial mismanagement he has uncovered as “criminal.”

He further criticized the previous administration for what he termed reckless handling of the economy, which has left the country with limited fiscal options.

“We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I’m discovering point to criminal handling of our economy. How a government can be so reckless, I cannot understand. But we are faced with reality, and our options are very few,” he said.

He emphasized the need for collective sacrifice, stating that government officials would not be exempt from fastening its belt. According to him, there is widespread public distrust in the political class because while ordinary citizens are struggling, politicians seem to be living in luxury.

“A certain distrust of the political class is a reason because it’s like when everybody else is tightening their belts, the political class is loosening its belt. But I want to assure you that we are all going to tighten our belts, and there will be no wasteful expenditure.”

President Mahama assured the Labour unions that his administration would adopt a governance approach focused on equitable resource distribution, stating, “It is such that we create and share.”
