Over 20,000 hectares of cash and food crop farms in the Asante-Akim Central municipality in the Ashanti region have been completely ravaged by wildfire, reports say.

Locals fear the sad situation poses imminent famine in the area.

The uncontrolled fire sustained for three days running, and destroyed cocoa, plantain, cassava and cocoyam, citrus and other crops.

At least 10,000 farmers in six communities Dwease, Praaso, Boatengkrom, Nsiakrom, Beposo and Nyamebekyere were hard hit by the incident.

The fire was believed to have started from the Dome Forest Reserve and escalated to the nearby farms.

Alhaji Braimah Boyong, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who led a team of officials of the assembly, to assess the extent of the damage, has described the incident as a “tragedy”, considering the huge farmlands that have been utterly destroyed by the fire.

He sympathized with the affected farmers over their loss and called on good spirited persons and organizations to come to their aid.
