Dr Osei Kuffour Afreh, the Deputy Director of Public Health, Brong-Ahafo Regional Health Directorate, has cautioned the public not to resort to self-medication on the deadly pneumococcal meningitis to control the impact of the outbreak.

He fears self medication would rather lead to a rapid spread of the disease, causing more deaths in the country.

The disease has been recorded in 18 municipals and districts, cautioning that if immediate measures were not taken to curtail the widespread disease it would spread to all the 27 districts.

He said those who complained of the symptoms of the meningitis strain should get to the nearest health facility for prompt attention.

Immediate signs and symptoms of the Pneumococcal meningitis include fever, headache, neck pains and convulsion.

Death toll has risen to 33 since the virus was detected, with the region recording 139 cases.

Dr Afreh gave the advice on the sidelines of the launch of a health project dubbed “Enhancing Maternal Mental Health of pregnant women, mothers and their children to realise the target goals for maternal and child health in Brong-Ahafo”.
