The Electoral Commission (EC) has now scheduled their proposed Limited Voter Registration for the last week of April.

The exercise which was planned to be executed in March, 2016, had to be postponed by the EC because of the absence of a legal backing document.

The Limited Voter Registration exercise is to enable new voters who have attained the age of 18 and above as well as those who qualify but were unable to register to do so was postponed because of the absence of a legal backing document.

Christian Owusu-Parry, Acting Director of Public Affairs of the EC, told Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM, Monday, that “at the time of drawing the calendar, the Constitutional Instrument to give legal backing to that decision was not in place. We are replacing CI 72 and we thought that the instrument was going to mature by that time but it has come out that the instrument will not mature before that date.”

“Even if it does, we have to do some education on the changes in the provisions of the new instrument. So the Commission has decided that to be able to have enough time to do education on the new instrument and the provision, there is the need to postpone the registration”.

He told Banson that the exercise would close by the end of the first week of May, 2016.

“If we stick to this timeline, we could finish everything before the elections. We have to complete the limited voter registration before we open nominations of candidates”.
