Displaced settlers at the Sodom and Gomorrah slum in the Central Business District of Accra Monday morning embarked on a massive demonstration to register their displeasure at Saturday’s demolition of some structures at the grounds.

An incensed crowd numbering hundreds Kasapa FM‘s reporter at the demonstration grounds Kwaku Opare says, are going up and down the long stretch of road between the Central Mosque and the slum and are chanting war songs.

He additionally reports that a heavy security presence has been brought in to fend off any possible extension.

The crowd he says are wielding placards bearing various messages as well as some sharp objects.

Officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly together with some security services Saturday ended a planned demolishing exercise of some structures at the slum, Ghana’s biggest.

The exercise saw hundreds of dwellers watch on as their illegal structures got pulled down, it came on the back of a hint President John Mahama gave midweek.

“People have gotten fresh sawdust to fill the lagoon to the extent that they are now putting up concrete structures, not even wooden structures. We have to de-silt this river,” Greater Accra Regional Minister Joshua Afotey-Agbo has made a point for the demolishing.
