An attempt to install a chief at Brekum Kato in the Brong Ahafo Region has resulted in the death of one person with two others said to be in life-threatening condition.

The names of the victims are immediately not known.

One of the two who are in critical condition has been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital while the other is on admission at the Brekum Holy Family Hospital.

The incident which happened on Monday, May 23, 2016, around 7:30 am saw two gates clashing at the palace of the late chief of the area.

The chieftaincy dispute in the area, Kaspafmonline.com learnt, has been in existence for over 60 years following the death of the late chief.

Police sources say one gate believed to be the children of the late chief and with the support of the Queenmother of the area decided to install a chief and thereby, provoking the other gate to attack them at the palace where gunshots were exchanged killing one instantly with two others sustaining life-threatening injuries.

The Queenmother, according to the Brong Ahafo Regional Police PRO, Christopher Tawiah, had earlier been cautioned by the Municipal Security Council and the Regional House of Chiefs not to install any chief in the area until the over 60-year dispute is settled amicably.

According to the Police PRO, had the men and black in uniform moved to the town swiftly, the situation would have escalated.

“Some of them had even planned to prevent the free flow of traffic in the town but because our men moved in swiftly, they were able to remove the blockades and sacked them from the scene. We then moved to the palace where we are protecting lives and property”, he noted.

So far nobody has been arrested in the rumpus but the Police PRO says the offense committed has been captured by the Criminal Offenses Code and would therefore be directed on what to do in the coming days.

“We want to restore peace and when the field is calm we can then move in to apprehend those who were involved in the mayhem”, ASP Tawiah told journalists.

The entire town, according to the Police, is calm where everybody is going about his or her normal duties.
