A total of 999,135 prepaid meters were procured between 2012 – 2015 at a cost of $99,277.089.43, deputy Minister for Power, John Abu Jinapor has revealed.

Out of this, 235,000 pieces were distributed to the operational areas of NEDCO at a cost of $14,653,738.42 while the remaining 764,135 pieces at a cost of $84,723,351.00 were supplied to ECG operational areas.

The government he noted, has target installing 7 million prepaid meters nationwide but fell short to give a timeline to achieve this objective.

Jinapor was answering to a question posed by the MP for Ablekuma North, Justice Joe Appiah, on how many pre-paid meters have been imported by the Government and the total cost.

He told Kasapa FM‘s Parliamentary correspondent Stephen Odoi-Larbi immediately after answering questions relating to the prepaid meters on the floor that the government is working hard to secure the needed funding to procure the remaining prepaid meters.

He further noted that the government would soon submit a contractual agreement before Parliament for approval to enable the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to procure of the pre-paid meters for installation.

The said agreement which Kasapafmonline.com has cited, is a loan agreement between the Government of the Republic of Ghana and Cal Bank Limited for an amount of US$80million to finance the supply of Smart pre-paid meters for the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited.
