A disability interest group in the Volta Region, Voice of People With Disability (VOICE), through its support systems is opening up operations to cover the mentally retarded, epileptics and persons who drink heavily.
The move is to address the severe circumstances of neglect of such persons, who are often left despised and without medical help, Chief Executive Officer of the NGO, Francis Asong stated at the NGO’s 2015 Annual General Meeting held in Ho.
The three-year implementation project is expected to reach thousands of people.
Already more than 400 people out of its targets have been identified in a baseline survey in four of the 16 districts – Ho-West, Ho-Central, Agotime-Ziope and Adaklu.
Asong said: “Voice-Ghana will provide the wherewithal for these health professionals to move from their posts to the communities to handle the cases.”
With an ultimate target of being morphed into a Disability Think-Tank, Mr Asong said the relevant constitutional works and alignments and networking were seriously progressing for it to be realized.
