The discontent among the grassroot supporters in relation to the “harsh” 4 month jail term of the two panellists and the host of Montie FM Pampaso programme has brought undue pressure amongst the national leadership, National Chairman of the ruling NDC, Dr. Kofi Portuphy has said.

The custodial sentencing of the three, according to Portuphy has a “destabilizing effect on the party”, as party foot soldiers, he said are seriously protesting the National leadership to act to bring the three back from prison.

“They stormed the party headquarters yesterday causing pandemonium, destroying properties and holding officials hostage at the party headquarters. The judgment is just too harsh. This has deepened the crisis we are in as a country,” the National Chairman of the NDC said in an interview with Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM.

He’s however, asked the party supporters to calm down, insisting that the leadership of the NDC is on its toes to ensure Mugabe and Co will be set free.

The incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the four-month jail-term handed to the three who were found guilty in the contempt case  against the justices of the Supreme court.

In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, and signed by the party’s Chairman, Kofi Portuphy, the party said it “has learned with utter shock, disbelief and dismay, the jailing of a journalist and two Ghanaian citizens by the Supreme Court of Ghana after contempt proceedings.

“This judgment sends an unfortunate impression about Ghana, its judiciary and severely dents our enviable reputation as a beacon of democracy on the African continent and beyond. The judgement also may undermine our position among countries with the freest media in the world.”
