The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has extended the Continuous Voter Registration exercise to Saturday, August 27, 2016.

The extension is to enable the Commission clear the backlogs of high number of registrants who turned up for the exercise across the country on Friday, August 19, 2016, but could not register due to network challenges and power outages at some registration centers.

The exercise was originally scheduled for August 19 and 26 respectively.

With the extension, it means all persons who were unable to register on Friday would have another opportunity to register on August 26 and 27 at the various district offices of the Commission across the country.

A statement signed by Head of Communications, Electoral Commission, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, said the extension date will cater for areas with high numbers and backlogs created by system challenges.

Friday’s exercise was marred by system challenges and higher than anticipated turnout of registrants forcing the EC to extend the registration which was initially scheduled to close at 5:00pm to 8:00pm across the country.
