An executive member of the Ghana Pentecostal Council, Rev. Dr Anyani Boadum has criticized the outgoing Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey for failing to report some politicians he claimed tried offering him bribe to gag him to the police.
The outspoken Rt Rev. Prof Emmanuel Martey at a Press conference on Tuesday in Accra, claimed the unnamed politicians intended to compromise him with $100,000 and further promised him a mansion at Trassaco and a four wheel drive, which he declined.
The Man of God who’s is known to be critical of the Mahama- led Adminstration has in the past received backlash from supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) including ministers when he has spoken on matters that the party considers not favourable.
Rt. Rev Prof. Martey told the gathering that nobody including politicians can gag him not even through bribes as he’s incorruptible.
“Listen, politicians have tried all means to muzzle me but they can’t. Politicians came to my house with bribes, fat envelopes… $100,000. And also with the promises that if you keep quiet we’ll give you a house at Trassaco with swimming pool and four wheel drive. These people were lucky that I did not have big dogs in my house, else I would have released the dogs to bite them for the whole world to ask Papa Moderator why are you so cruel and I will tell them, ask them what they came to do.
He added:”You know what, they have tried all means to muzzle me but they couldn’t and they can’t. You know, what I will speak today, and speak tomorrow. You know the tax I pay, when my pay slip comes and I see the tax I pay, I get worried, but at the same time I say praise be to God because it’s going to build our Nation. Then when my tax goes, you babies with sharp teethes steal the money and you don’t want us to talk? We will talk today and talk tomorrow. I pay tax but some of them don’t pay tax. Even the petrol allowance that is given me I pay tax on each gallon.”
But hours later, a former Public Relations Officer of the Church, Rev. Emmanuel Acheampong who fell out with the Moderator and was later sacked has discountered the claims of Rt. Rev. Prof. Martey, claiming the latter actually took the offer from the said politician.
However commenting on the matter in an interview with Kasapa FM’s Akwasi Nsiah, Rev. Dr Anyani Boadum bemoaned the controversy that has arisen stated that Rt. Rev. Prof. Martey should have reported the said politicians to the police to face the law and not to release attack dogs on them as the latter indicated he would have done.
He urged the Presbyterian Church of Ghana to issue an official statement to clarify the murky issues that has scandalized the revered church.
“Being a man of God I don’t have any reason to doubt any of these two men of God. Their positions are putting a serious indictment on the Presbyterian Church of Ghana which is one of the oldest churches in Ghana which we all hold in high esteem which has being mentors to most people and churches. The church must come out very clean so that this matter will be settled.”
Rev. Dr Anyani Boadum also flayed the media for not asking the Moderator further questions to probe his claims.
“This was a press conference but the media personnel at the event did not ask any follow up questions, all I heard in the tape was people laughing when he made the allegation. Sometimes the sort of questions that the media men don’t ask, create problems for all of us. I expect that the Moderator must be a unifier for all of us. What is going on is bad for Christianity.”
