With less than three months to the December 7 election, the New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidate for the Karaga constituency in the Northern region for the 2016 elections Shaharawi Bashiru has stepped down.

He has decided not to contest the polls after his doctors advised him to quit on health grounds. The move will afford him the opportunity to undergo intensive treatment after surviving an accident last year.

Shaharawi Bashiru escaped death by a whisker when the V8 vehicle in which he was travelling with two others had its front tire burst and crashed into a tree killing the other occupants instantly on the Kumasi-Kintampo Highway, Saturday, November 08, 2015.

He was initially pronounced dead until proven otherwise only when he had been conveyed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital morgue where he was found to be unconscious.

The parliamentary candidate reportedly was just about being put in the mortuary when he shook himself much to the surprise of many at the facility.

Northern Regional Secretary of the party Sule Salifu has indicated that five persons have already picked up nominations forms after the position was declared vacant.

Vetting of the candidates will be on Thursday followed by the elections on Saturday at Savelugu.
