The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) has served notice to government of an impending picketing Wednesday December 28 at the Ministry of Education in relation to government’s failure to pay the feeding grants for students of colleges of education and salaries of newly trained teachers.
A statement released by the group expressed disappointment in the outgoing government for ignoring the payment of the feeding grants of students of colleges of education after scrapping the teacher trainees’ allowances.
“The Government of Ghana over the years has treated teacher trainees so poorly and has refused to pay feeding grants to students after the scrapping of the teacher trainees’ allowances and several unfulfilled promises even by top officials like the president and the vice president,” a press release from the association said.
The statement added: “The leadership of teacher trainees has sent several petitions, letters to the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service. Students have put red bands on their arms to lectures to express our utmost displeasure. Several press conferences have been organised. Our leadership has gone ahead even to sleep at the Ministry but ‘something good’ is yet to come out of these efforts.”
The statement thus called on all teacher unions, teacher trainees, and other stakeholders to join in the fight to address their problem.
