President Akufo-Addo has announced that consultations are underway with Zongo communities nationwide to map out strategies towards developing the zongos.

The Zongo Development Ministry is embarking on the project in fulfillment of the NPP government’s campaign promise to fix zongos.

Addressing Muslims after the  Eid al-Fitr prayers at the Independence Square in Accra, President Akufo-Addo said government is keen on ensuring that zongos are given a facelift under his government.

We have lived our manifesto commitment to appoint first the Minister responsible for Zongo and Inner Coty Development and valso to establish a zongo development fund. We have in the 2017 Asempa budget set aside a GHS 219 million as seed money for the establishment of the Zongo development Fund. we are in the process of fashioning out the Zongo Development Fund law, which when enacted by parliament will trigger the use of the money for the development of our Zongo communities. The Minister for Zongo and Inner-City development, the highly respected Hon.

He added: “Boniface Abubakar Saddique is currently undertaking a nationwide consultative process on the use of the fund when it becomes operational. It’s in line with our bottom-up approach to development. I encourage all Zongo residents and persons of Inner-cities to participate in this consultative fora and contribute ideas that will enable us fashion out a blue-print that will be acceptable and practicable and which will inure to the benefit of people in zongo and Inner-Cities. it is time we brought prosperity to all parts of the country” he said.

Muslims in Ghana today joined their counterparts across the world in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan,the Islamic holy month of fasting which lasted 30 days.

The National Chief Imam and other Muslims gathered at the Independence Square to commemorate the day.

A number of celebrations are also expected to be organized across the country to mark today’s holiday.
