Former President of the land, John Dramani Mahama, says he fully supports the demonstration against the Ghana-U.S. military pact.
Mr. Mahama who is currently in Sierra Leone to observe the country’s elections in a tweet declared his support for the demonstration dubbed “Ghana First”.
The former Ghanaian leader also in 2015 approved a similar military relationship deal with the U.S. Government where the latter used Ghana as a base to launch offensive attacks on terrorists in neighboring Nigeria.
The demonstration, which was led by former government officials including former vice president Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, was organized by Ghana First Patriotic Front.
The Ghana-U.S. military cooperation agreement gives American soldiers unimpeded access to certain key installations.
The U.S. Government is committing US$20 million in this military relationship agreement with the Government of Ghana.
A day before Wednesday’s demonstration exercise, a deputy Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, was arrested by the Police for passing out treasonable comments.
Mr. Mahama is a member of the NDC and it is the same political party he rode on its shoulders to become the President of the Republic of Ghana in 2012.
But the former Ghanaian leader condemned Mr. Anyidoho’s arrest and argued that the heavy force that moved in on the main opposition NDC official during a Presser in Accra following his alleged treasonable comments was “disproportionate.”
He said the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has shot itself in the foot as a party which prides itself in free speech.
“As a party that prides itself in the non-criminalization of speech, with a self-acclaimed human rights activist as President, the arrest of K. Anyidoho with armed men in the middle of a press event is obviously disproportionate,”
Mr. Mahama who’s currently in Sierra Leone observing that country’s election posted on his Facebook wall.
The Police have officially charged Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho with Treason following his declaration that there will be civil coup to oust President Akufo Addo.
He was denied bail on Tuesday.
Sources say, Police relocated the NDC official from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra where he had been held up after his arrest Tuesday afternoon to unknown place.
He’s expected to be arraigned before court Wednesday (today) after Police conclude their investigations.
