The Convener of Let My Vote Count Alliance and allied groups, David Asante, is insisting his group will go ahead with their planned picketing exercise at the premises of the Electoral Commission (EC) and Parliament to demand for a new voters register despite the Police refusing to grant their request.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command on Tuesday turned down a request by the pressure group and its allied units to picket at the premises of the EC and Parliament citing security reasons to back down their action.

According to the Police, the premises of the EC is a security zone and therefore could not be accessed by the group.

They have directed the group to stage their exercise at the Black Star Square following which they could present their petition to officials of the EC and Parliament.

But Asante in an interview with Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Si Me So on Kasapa 102.3 FM said their planned event scheduled for September 16, 2015, will still come on.

“We notified the Police and today, they invited us to our office to discuss our request. In short, they have turned down our request to picket at the  premises of the Electoral Commission. They don’t understand why we are going to the premises of the EC to picket over there. They rather told us to converge at the Black Star Square.”

“With the greatest of respect, we don’t understand. How come that we will be picketing at the premises of the EC to demand for a new voters register and you to tell us to rather go to the Black Star Square? Where is the political sense of the Police in this position?”

“The Constitution of the Republic of Ghana says before a public gathering you have to notify the Police for five working days. We sent our letter to the Police way ahead. We have given the Police ten clear working days notification. As far as the Constitution enjoins us and gives us the right to demonstrate at a location which is not the seat of government or a military installation, we shall defy the police and uphold our constitutional right and on September 16, 2015, go to the EC and picket there,” he noted.
