The Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, Nana Oye Lithur, is seeking “political refuge” in the Shama constituency as she has picked nomination forms to contest in the ruling National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary primaries slated for November 7.

She sent a delegation to pick the forms on her behalf ahead of the closure of nominations on Thursday September 10.

The minister’s latest move amounts to her beating a sharp retreat as she had earlier considered contesting the Odododiodio seat in the Greater Accra Region.

Political analysts view her decision as a smart one as she contesting the Odododiodio seat would have been politically suicidal since the minister would have had an uphill task upstaging the incumbent MP, Nii Lante Vanderpuye.

Ahead of her finally settling on Shama, Nana Oye Lithur had indicated that she had alternatives to either contest at Odododiodio and Krowor in the Greater Accra region, and Akropong in the Eastern Region.

The Barrister and Human Rights activist is no stranger to Shama as her mother hails from that town and she visits the area on a regularly basis.

For now it remains to be seen whether she can successfully unseat the current Member of Parliament for the area Gabriel Essilfie, who is the Chairman of the Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs Committee of Parliament.

The sitting MP captured the Shama seat for the NDC in 2008 after wrestling it from the NPP’s Angelina Baiden-Amissah.
