Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Prof. Mike Aaron Oquaye has indicated that going forward each Member of Parliament will be restricted to serve on one committee at a time.

According to him, some MPs have become jack of all trade serving on several committees of Parliament which does not auger well for the discharge of their Parliamentary duties.

Addressing some selected Journalists in Accra on Tuesday, Rt. Hon. Prof. Mike Aaron Oquaye stated that this situation will change with the adoption of a revised Standing Orders of Parliament which is currently being reviewed.

“We’re even revising our Standing Orders as we speak because for example if you go to Britain one-member one-Committee, here we have people on three four committees and then you become a jack of all trade. We’ve all agreed both sides of the House the Leadership at least that this is not good enough, it doesn’t help us in doing our job well.

“In the revision of our Standing Orders we’re proposing that a member (MP) should be a member of only one committee and be specialized. So that when we talk about the Education Committee of Parliament, the Chair of that Committee will also have the position of a Chief Whip in this House and that’s a very high office to occupy with your own letter head, your own department and doing the kind of work that people do in the US Senate.

Per the Standing Orders of Ghana’s Parliament, each Member of Parliament is required to be a member of at least one Committee of Parliament.
