Lawyers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are in the process of securing the release of leaders of the Let My Vote Count Alliance, Movement for Change and Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) who led today’s demonstration.

They have been arrested and put behind bars at the Police Headquaters following the chaos that ensued during the protest where dozens sustained various degrees of injury.

Pandemonium broke when riot control police fired tear gas and hot water canons on protesters who have taken to the streets in support of the call for the compilation of a new voters register.

The police took the action after some recalcitrant demonstrators wanted to force their way through barricades that had been erected to block access to the offices of the Electoral Commission, which the police insist is a security zone.

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gabby Asare Otchere Darko who was beaten with baton and horse whips by the police in an interview with Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Si Mi So on Kasapa 102.3 FM condemned the brutality.

“It is not in the place of the police to determine what constitutes contempt of court. I don’t see any basis for the arrest apart from trying to intimidate the people. The police were just using excessive force; I don’t think the police’s action will cow into submission the leaders pushing for a new voters register. If they intended to do that to put fear in the people, then they have failed woefully”.
