President Akufo Addo and ex-President John Mahama have commiserated with the families of about 60 passengers who died following a head-on collision involving two buses on the Techiman – Kintampo road in the Bono East region on Friday.
Eyewitnesses say one of the buses caught fire leaving over 30 passengers burnt beyond recognition with the other bus seriously mangled.
Health officials say at least 28 people are currently receiving treatment at health facilities in Kintampo and its environs.
President Akufo Addo in his speech at the end-of-year WASSA of the Ghana Police Service, held at its Headquarters on Friday, consoled the families of the bereaved and wished the injured well.
“My condolences to all the families and loved ones of the deceased. May the Almighty grant their souls peaceful rest.”
On his part, ex-President Mahama in a statement prayed for the injured and beseeched God to grant them a speedy recovery.
“I have received confirmation of two horrific accidents at Kintampo and Ekumfi Dunkwa, reported to have claimed many lives.
“Another sad day for our dear country. Our roads are becoming killing fields and road safety continues to be a major challenge. All stakeholders on road safety- the licensing authority, drivers unions, Police, Road safety commission, and Government- must not relent in their efforts to make our roads safer.
The statement added: My condolences and that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) go to the families of the deceased persons.
Our prayers are also with those injured and we beseech God to grant them a speedy recovery.”
