The Media Coalition Against Galamsey (illegal mining) (MCAG) is calling for a full-scale independent investigation into allegations made against the police by a Chinese woman arrested for illegally transporting four containers of Rosewood.

Helena Huang who has been granted a police inquiry bail claims the police only arrested her after she refused to pay GHC800 bribe for the four containers of endangered wood lumbers.

The Police have already hinted of an investigation into her claims.

Speaking to Starr News, Convener of the Media Coalition against illegal mining, Ken Ashigbey should not be treated lightly.

“Our current system where the police have to do internal investigation is not really helping us. We need to continue pushing this advocacy so that we can have independent third parties when these allegations come in so that they can investigate. For the case of natural justice, we should not have the police being judge and jury in their own case, an external party should be able to look into this and I’m pretty sure that there are other independent investigative bodies around who can look into these things.

“The cost to us as a people is so huge and if this woman is making this allegation let’s not sweep it under the carpet, ideally we should have another body apart from the police being able to investigate it,” Ken Ashigbey added.
